I'm not sure your meaning is in keeping with the original intent of this saying, Steven, but I'm with you. We've been spoiling him for 14 years now and never raised a rod to him and I wouldn't have it any other way! And he's a good kid if I do say so myself.

You got the meaning.  I spoiled my daughter and also never needed a rod.  I always took that saying as opposite to its intended meaning.  And my daughter turned out to be a lovely, caring teeenager, who is turning 16 next week.
